Repost a video in the TikTok app
- Open the post. In the TikTok app, go to the video or photo post you want your followers to see.
- Tap Share. Tap the Share arrow on the side of the post.
- Tap Repost. Tap Repost. TikTok reposts right away, with no extra confirmation screen.
- Or press and hold. As a shortcut, press and hold on the video, then tap Repost.
- Check your Repost tab. Open your profile and look under the Repost tab to confirm the post is listed there.
What is a repost on TikTok?
A repost on TikTok shares someone else's post into your friends' and followers' For You feeds, labeled as a repost with your profile photo and nickname. You do not upload anything. The video stays the creator's, with their name, caption and views.
TikTok's help page on reposts describes it as a way to pass along posts you find interesting to your friends and community. The post looks the same as any other in the feed. The only difference is the small repost label and your face on it.
- It shows up in other people's For You feed, marked as a repost.
- It is listed under the Repost tab on your profile.
- People who can see it can reply to your repost.
- It works on both videos and photo posts that you can open in the app.
How do you repost on TikTok?
Open the post, tap Share, then tap Repost. That is the standard route. TikTok Help lists two shortcuts that do the same thing: press and hold the video, or tap a friend's photo on a post they already reposted.
| Way | Where you tap | Button | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Share panel | Share arrow on the post | Repost | You are already watching the video |
| 2. Long press | Anywhere on the video | Repost | You want the fewest taps |
| 3. Friend's photo | Friend's profile photo at the bottom | Repost | A friend reposted it first |
All three routes start with the words “In the TikTok app” in TikTok's instructions. We found no documented way to repost from tiktok.com in a desktop browser, so use your phone or tablet.
Way 1: how do you repost from the Share button?
Tap the Share arrow on the right side of the post, then tap Repost. It is the easiest route to remember because every sharing option lives in that same panel.
- Open TikTok and go to the post you want to pass along.
- Tap the Share arrow on the side of the post.
- Tap Repost in the panel.
- Close the panel. The post is now in your Repost tab.
Once you tap, it is done. TikTok Help puts it plainly:
“Keep in mind that once you tap repost, the content will be reposted.”
So there is no draft and no preview. If you tapped by mistake, the fix is just as quick: see how to delete a repost on TikTok for the three undo buttons.
Way 2: can you press and hold to repost?
Yes. Press and hold on the video until a menu appears, then tap Repost. It saves a tap compared with the Share panel and is handy when you are scrolling fast.
- Hold on the video itself, not on the caption, the sound or the side buttons.
- Wait for the menu to slide up from the bottom.
- Tap Repost and keep scrolling.
The same long press works later to undo it, where the option reads Remove repost. That symmetry makes the long press the best habit to build if you repost often.
Way 3: how do you repost something a friend reposted?
When a friend has reposted a post, their profile photo shows at the bottom of it. Tap their photo, then tap Repost, and the post goes to your followers too.
This is the only route that starts from someone else's repost rather than from the original post. The result is the same: the post is credited to its creator and listed in your own Repost tab, not your friend's.
Several friends may have reposted the same video. Their photos can appear side by side at the bottom, so tap carefully.
Can you add a comment when you repost on TikTok?
Sometimes. TikTok Help says your “repost text” is visible to others on your profile, but its step list ends at tapping Repost and does not explain how to add that text. If your app shows a box for a thought after you tap, what you type becomes the repost text.
If no text box appears, your version reposts straight away with no comment. That is normal and not a bug. You still have other ways to add your voice:
- Reply to your friends' reposts to talk about a post they shared.
- Comment on the original post so the creator sees your words.
- Make a Duet or a Stitch if you want to add your face or your voice, when the creator allows it.
- Send it in a direct message with a note, when it is meant for one person.
Keep in mind that whatever you write as repost text is public on a public account. Write it as if the creator will read it.
How do you reply to someone's repost?
Open the reposted post, tap your friend's profile photo at the bottom, tap Reply, type your message and tap Send. Your reply is attached to their repost, not to the creator's comment section.
- Go to the reposted post in the TikTok app.
- Tap your friend's profile photo at the bottom.
- Tap Reply.
- Type your reply, then tap the Send button.
One detail matters for privacy. TikTok Help notes that your comment privacy settings do not apply to repost replies. Filters you set for comments will not stop replies on reposts.
Where do your reposts appear?
In two places: the For You feed of your friends and followers, and the Repost tab on your profile. They never appear in your main Videos grid, because you did not post them.
| Place | What shows | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Followers' For You feed | The post, labeled as a repost with your photo and nickname | Friends and followers TikTok shows it to |
| Repost tab on your profile | Every post you reposted from this account | Anyone who can view your profile (public) or your followers (private) |
| Your Videos grid | Nothing. Reposts are not your uploads | Not applicable |
| Creator's post | Your photo at the bottom, for people who see your repost | People shown your repost |
- Reposts are labeled, so nobody mistakes them for your own videos.
- Your Repost tab works like a public playlist of what you recommend.
- The creator keeps the views, likes and comments on the original.
TikTok does not promise that every follower will see each repost. It says reposts appear in For You, which TikTok's own recommendation system fills, so reach can vary from post to post.
Who can see what you repost on TikTok?
On a public account, your reposts, repost text and repost replies are visible to others on your profile. On a private account, only your followers can see your reposts, on your profile and in their For You feed.
Public account
- Anyone who opens your profile can browse the Repost tab.
- People who see your repost can reply to it.
- Your repost text, if any, is visible too.
Private account
- Only followers you approved can see your reposts.
- Reposts reach those followers' For You feed, not the wider public.
Switching between public and private changes who sees your reposts from then on. It does not delete any of them.
The creator's own settings still apply to the original post. Reposting never makes a post visible to people the creator has excluded. If you are curious about other quiet signals on your profile, read whether you can see who saved your TikTok.
Repost vs share vs Duet vs Stitch vs re-upload: what is the difference?
A repost forwards the original to your followers. A share sends a link to a chat or another app. A Duet and a Stitch are new videos you record that include the original. A re-upload is posting the file as your own, which TikTok's rules usually forbid without permission.
| Action | What you make | Creator credit | Needs creator's setting | Where it lands |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repost | Nothing new | Automatic, the post is theirs | No | Followers' For You feed and your Repost tab |
| Share | A link or a DM | Automatic | No | A chat, an app or a friend's inbox |
| Duet | A split-screen video | Built into the Duet | Yes, Duet must be on | Your profile only |
| Stitch | A video that uses part of theirs | Built into the Stitch | Yes, reuse must be allowed | Your profile |
| Re-upload | A copy posted as yours | Only if you add it | Permission from the owner | Your profile, at risk of removal |
- Want followers to see it with no effort? Repost.
- Want one person to see it? Share it in a message.
- Want to add your face or voice? Duet or Stitch.
- Want to post your own clip on another app? Save it with the MP4 downloader and upload it there.
Most people who search how to repost on TikTok want the first row. The others are useful when you want to add your own content, or when the target audience is one friend rather than all your followers.
How is a repost different from a share?
A share goes to someone. A repost goes to everyone who follows you. Both start from the same Share button, which is why people mix them up.
According to TikTok's sharing guide, the Share button lets you send a post inside TikTok or through other social apps. If you send a post to a friend on another platform, TikTok may also deliver it to them on TikTok when they tap the link and allow direct messages.
- Use Repost when you want all your followers to see it.
- Use Send to friends when it is a private joke.
- Use Copy link when you want to paste it into another app or a chat.
What is a Duet, and when is it better than a repost?
A Duet puts your new video side by side with another creator's video in a split screen, both playing at once. Pick it over a repost when you want to react, sing along or add something on camera.
TikTok's Duet help page lists a few rules that do not apply to reposts:
- The creator must have a public account to allow Duets.
- Not all videos have Duet turned on, so the button can be missing.
- Your Duet appears only on your profile, and the original stays only on theirs.
- The creator can delete Duet videos linked to their post.
A repost needs none of this. It is the fastest way to recommend a video, and a Duet is the way to join it.
What is a Stitch, and how does it compare?
A Stitch lets you use a portion of another TikTok video at the start of your own new video. It works when you want to answer or build on something specific another creator said.
The creator decides who may Stitch through Settings and privacy, Privacy, Reuse of content, as TikTok's Stitch privacy page explains. They need a public account, and turning reuse off for a post also affects Duets, stickers and adding the post to Stories.
Reposting does not appear in that reuse menu in TikTok Help. A creator who blocks Stitch and Duet may still see their posts reposted, because a repost never copies or edits the video.
Why is the Repost button missing on TikTok?
The most common reasons are an old app version, a feature that has not reached your account yet, or simply looking in the wrong place. TikTok Help does not list a setting that turns reposting off, so work through the basics first.
| Possible cause | What TikTok says | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Old app version | Make sure you run the latest version of the TikTok app and your phone's system | Update TikTok from the App Store or Google Play |
| Feature not rolled out to you | Features are tested with a limited number of users and may not be available to you yet | Update and check again in a few days |
| App glitch or weak connection | Restart the app and device, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data | Close TikTok fully and reopen it |
| Cached data | Clearing the app cache removes temporary files that can cause issues | Settings and privacy, Free up space, Clear cache |
| Using a browser | Repost steps are written for the TikTok app | Use the phone app |
If the button still does not appear, use the in-app Need more help? link to send TikTok a ticket. Do not install third-party apps that promise to unlock reposting.
Is reposting available in every region and app version?
TikTok does not publish a country list for reposting. What it does say is that new features and changes are tested on a limited number of users first, so some accounts get a feature later than others.
“We regularly test features with a limited number of users to gather feedback. This means some new features or changes may not be available to you yet.”
TikTok's post privacy page also mentions that content can be seen globally even where a feature is not available in your region. In plain words: features differ by region and by account.
TikTok does not say which features are missing where. We could not verify any specific country where reposting is blocked, so we will not list one.
- Keep TikTok updated, since older versions miss newer buttons.
- Keep your phone's operating system updated, as TikTok advises.
- Compare with a friend's phone. If their app has Repost and yours does not, it is likely a rollout gap.
Can you repost your own TikTok video?
TikTok Help does not cover reposting your own post, and we could not confirm that the Repost button works on it. Your own video already lives in your Videos grid, so a repost would add little.
What creators usually want is to post their clip again on another platform. That is a different job. You need the file. TikTok's download help page says you can tap Share, then Save video, and it recommends saving your own videos before you post so you have offline copies.
If the Save option is missing or you want the file without the watermark, paste the link into the TikTok to MP4 converter or our free TikTok downloader. Both read public posts only. If TikTok does not serve the file, we cannot get it.
How do you post your own TikTok on Instagram, YouTube or another app?
Save your own video as a file, then upload it like any new post on the other app. Reposting inside TikTok cannot push a video to other platforms; it only works within TikTok.
- Copy the link of your own TikTok post from the Share panel.
- Open the Tiktokioo.com downloader in any browser and paste the link.
- Save the MP4. Resolving a public post usually takes 0.6 to 1.8 seconds.
- Download the file before the link expires after 1 hour.
- Upload it to the other app with a fresh caption.
Want only the soundtrack or your voice-over? TikTok to MP3 saves the audio; a 15-second sound is roughly 0.25 MB as M4A. Posted a photo carousel? The slideshow downloader saves each image.
The HD copy TikTok serves is often H.265 (HEVC). Most recent phones play it, but some older editors may want you to convert it first.
Can you re-upload someone else's TikTok if you give credit?
Credit alone does not make it allowed. TikTok's rules say you should post only content you created or have the right to share, and they list reposting copyrighted material without permission as a violation. A repost inside TikTok is the safe way to share someone else's clip.
“You should only post content you created or have the right to share.”
The Community Guidelines also make reused content with someone else's watermark or logo ineligible for the For You feed when it has no creative edits. So even when a re-upload is not removed, it may simply not be shown.
- Ask first. A direct message to the creator asking to reuse a clip is the cleanest route.
- Credit by name in the caption once you have permission.
- Add something new, such as commentary or review, rather than posting the raw clip.
- When in doubt, repost inside TikTok instead of uploading a copy.
What does TikTok's copyright policy say about reposting?
TikTok's Terms of Service and Community Guidelines do not allow posting, sharing or sending content that infringes someone's copyright, trademark or other IP rights. Exceptions exist, such as fair use, quotation, criticism and review.
TikTok's copyright help page also explains what happens when a re-upload is reported and removed:
| What happens | Detail from TikTok Help |
|---|---|
| Content is removed | If TikTok finds a violation of its Intellectual Property Policy |
| Both sides are told | The reporter and the reported person are notified |
| A strike is issued | Under the repeat infringer policy |
| Strikes expire | After 90 days on your record |
| Account ban | Example given: 3 copyright strikes and 1 trademark strike lead to a ban |
TikTok also notes that not knowing the rules is not a valid defense. Our own guide on removing a repost covers in-app reposts only; a re-uploaded copy has to be deleted like any of your posts.
Does a creator get notified when you repost?
TikTok Help does not say whether creators get a notification for each repost, and we could not verify it either way. What is documented is that reposts show your photo and nickname to people who see them in For You.
- Your photo and nickname show on the repost for people who see it.
- Replies go to your repost, not to the creator's comment section.
- A comment on the original is the one action sure to land on the creator's post.
If you want a creator to know you shared their work, a comment on the original post is the reliable route. Many creators read comments closely, and they always land on the creator's own post.
How do you undo a repost on TikTok?
Open the post, tap Share, then tap Delete repost. You can also press and hold the video and tap Remove repost, or tap your profile photo at the bottom of the post and tap Remove.
Two things to know before you do it. All replies to your repost are deleted with it, and the Repost button comes back so you can repost again later. The full walkthrough, including how to delete just one reply, is in our guide on how to delete a repost on TikTok.
- Undoing a repost never touches the creator's post.
- There is no bulk undo in TikTok Help; reposts are removed one by one.
- Your Repost tab is the fastest place to find old reposts.
When should you repost, and when should you not?
Repost when a post fits what your followers expect from you. Skip it when it is personal, when it would surprise people who follow you for a specific topic, or when you only want to watch it again later.
| Situation | Best action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A video your followers would enjoy | Repost | Shares it with credit in two taps |
| A joke for one friend | Send to friends | Your followers do not see it |
| You want to react on camera | Duet or Stitch | Adds your own content, if allowed |
| You want to watch it later | Favorite | Keeps it out of followers' feeds |
| Your own clip for another app | Save the file | Reposting cannot leave TikTok |
- Repost often enough that your tab shows your taste.
- Avoid reposting the same creator ten times in a row.
- Remove reposts that no longer fit, using the three undo buttons.
A tidy Repost tab also tells new visitors what your account is about. If it looks cluttered, a short clean-up session helps.
How many people can a repost reach?
There is no published number for repost reach. TikTok decides how many followers see each repost in For You. The app's overall size shows why reposting matters: Wikipedia reports TikTok passed 2 billion mobile downloads in April 2020.
- About 800 million monthly active users worldwide in July 2020, excluding Douyin.
- 1 billion users reported in September 2021.
- Over 100 million monthly active users in the United States in the first quarter of 2022.
A repost travels inside that audience, labeled with your name, which is why it is worth choosing what you repost on TikTok with a little care. For more on TikTok's history and features, the Wikipedia article is a good read.
Quick checklist before you repost
Run through these five checks and you will rarely need to undo a repost:
- Make sure you are signed in to the account you mean to use.
- Ask yourself whether your followers would want this in their feed.
- Check whether the creator would mind; when unsure, comment instead.
- If your app offers repost text, keep it kind and short.
- For your own clips, save the file with the TikTok downloader before you delete anything.
Tiktokioo.com is an independent tool and is not affiliated with TikTok or ByteDance. It saves public posts only, so use it for your own content or content you have permission to keep.
