How to save a TikTok as an MP4 file
- Copy the TikTok link. Open the post in TikTok, tap Share, then Copy link.
- Paste it on this page. Tap the box at the top of this page and paste the link, or use the Paste button.
- Tap Download. We read the post in about a second. Our tests on public posts took between 0.6 and 1.8 seconds.
- Pick an MP4 button. Choose Download MP4 (no watermark), Download HD MP4 or MP4 with watermark. The file lands in your Downloads folder.
What does TikTok to MP4 actually mean?
It means getting a TikTok clip as a normal .mp4 file on your device. TikTok already stores its videos as MP4, so no conversion is needed: we find the file TikTok serves and you download it as it is.
Many "converters" decode the clip and encode it again. That costs time and quality, like photocopying a photocopy. Our TikTok to MP4 tool, like the main TikTok downloader, skips that step entirely. The bytes come from TikTok's own CDN and go straight to you.
So what is an MP4, exactly?
MP4 is a container, not a codec. Wikipedia describes it as MPEG-4 Part 14, standardized as ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003. The box holds a video track, an audio track and some data, such as resolution and frame rate.
- Container: the .mp4 box itself.
- Video codec: how the pictures are squeezed, often H.264 or H.265.
- Audio codec: usually AAC, the same sound you can save on the TikTok to MP3 page.
Every tool on Tiktokioo.com is listed below. Pick another one if you came for photos, stories or sound only:
How do you save a TikTok as an MP4 in four steps?
Copy the link, paste it above, tap Download, then pick an MP4 button. It works the same on a phone, a tablet or a computer, and you never sign in.
Step 1: copy the post link
In the TikTok app, open the clip and tap Share, then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address bar while the video is open. Short vm.tiktok.com links are fine.
Step 2: paste it here and tap Download
Paste into the box at the top of this page. We ask TikTok for the post; on real public posts that took us 0.6 to 1.8 seconds.
Step 3: pick the MP4 you want
Four buttons appear. Three give you an MP4 and one gives you the sound. The next section explains which to tap. Each download link works for one hour.
- Copy the TikTok link.
- Paste it on Tiktokioo.com.
- Tap Download.
- Tap the MP4 button you need.
Which download button should you tap?
For most people, Download MP4 (no watermark) is the right choice: clean picture, opens everywhere. Pick HD MP4 when you want the sharpest copy, and the watermark version when you want the credit burned in. The same buttons sit on the home page downloader.
| Button | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Download MP4 (no watermark) | The clip without the TikTok logo overlay | Everyday saving, editing, any player |
| Download HD MP4 | TikTok's highest-quality copy, when it has one; often H.265 | Big screens, archiving, recent phones |
| MP4 with watermark | The clip with the TikTok logo and username on it | Sharing while keeping visible credit |
| Download audio | The sound only, as .m4a or .mp3 | Music, voice notes, lessons |
Why is there no HD button sometimes?
Because TikTok does not keep an HD copy of every post. If TikTok does not serve a file, we cannot get it. The no-watermark MP4 is still there and plays fine.
Only want the track? The TikTok MP3 tool gives you the sound alone, which is far lighter than a video file.
What is the difference between H.264 and H.265 (HEVC)?
Both are ways to compress video inside an MP4. H.265, also called HEVC, makes files smaller at the same quality, but older devices may not play it. H.264 is older and plays almost everywhere.
Wikipedia reports that HEVC achieves 25% to 50% better compression than H.264 (AVC) at the same quality. The same article says H.264 was used by 79% of video industry developers as of December 2024, which is why it remains the safe default.
“HEIF and HEVC offer better compression than JPEG and H.264, so they use less storage space on your devices and iCloud Photos, while preserving the same visual quality.”
| H.264 / AVC | H.265 / HEVC | |
|---|---|---|
| First published | May 2003 (final draft) | June 2013 |
| File size at equal quality | Baseline | 25–50% smaller |
| iPhone and iPad | Yes | iOS 11 or later |
| Mac | Yes | macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later |
| Android | Yes | Built in since Android 5 Lollipop (2014) |
| Windows | Yes | Needs the HEVC extension from Microsoft Store |
How do you know which codec you got?
When the HD file uses H.265, the result screen tells you so under the button. In our tests the HD copy is often HEVC. If a player shows sound with a black picture, that is the classic sign of a missing HEVC decoder.
MP4 vs MOV vs WebM vs GIF: which format is best for a TikTok?
MP4 is the best all-round format for a saved TikTok: it keeps the sound, the full color and a small size, and it opens on every current phone and computer. The others only make sense for specific jobs.
| Format | What it is | Typical codecs | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP4 (.mp4) | ISO standard container, 2003 | H.264, H.265, AV1 + AAC | Widest support on phones, TVs and PCs |
| MOV (.mov) | Apple's QuickTime File Format | Same MPEG-4 codecs | MP4 was built on it; mostly interchangeable on Apple gear |
| WebM (.webm) | Royalty-free, Matroska-based, 2010 | VP8, VP9, AV1 + Vorbis, Opus | Native on iPhone only since iOS 15 (2021) |
| GIF (.gif) | Image format from 1987 | LZW, 256 colors per frame | No sound, heavy files for long clips |
Should you ever turn the MP4 into a MOV?
Rarely. Wikipedia notes that MP4 is essentially identical to the QuickTime format it grew from. Apple's apps open .mp4 directly, so renaming or re-wrapping gains nothing.
Why not WebM?
WebM is great on the web, but TikTok does not hand out WebM files, and converting would mean a full re-encode. Keep the MP4.
Is a GIF better than an MP4 for short loops?
Usually not. A GIF drops the sound, limits each frame to 256 colors and grows heavy fast. Keep the MP4 as your master copy and make a GIF from it only when a chat or forum demands one.
“While once in widespread usage on the World Wide Web because of its wide implementation and portability between applications and operating systems, usage of the format has declined for space and quality reasons, often being replaced with newer formats such as PNG for static images and MP4 for videos.”
TikTok's own help notes that when a creator allows downloads, people can convert their videos to GIFs. A full walkthrough is on the way in our guide how to turn a TikTok into a GIF.
How big is a TikTok MP4 file?
It depends on the post: length, resolution and codec all change the size, so we do not quote a fixed MB-per-minute figure. What we can say for sure is that an H.265 copy is smaller than an H.264 copy of the same quality.
- HEVC needs 25–50% less data than H.264 for the same picture.
- One hour of 4K at 30 fps: about 45 GB in H.264 vs 22.5 GB in HEVC.
- The sound alone is tiny: a 15-second track measured about 0.25 MB.
Short on space? Save just the sound with the TikTok to MP3 converter, or the pictures of a photo post with the slideshow downloader.
How do you play and edit the MP4 on iPhone?
Open the Files app, tap Browse, then tap Downloads, and tap the MP4 to play it. Apple's Files guide adds that if Downloads is missing from Browse, you should look under iCloud Drive.
Once the clip is in your Photos library, Apple's guide to trimming video on iPhone says to drag either end of the frame viewer, tap Done, then pick Save Video or Save Video as New Clip.
- HD files in H.265 need iOS 11 or later, per Apple.
- Save as a new clip if you want to keep the untouched original.
- AirDrop and Messages may send HEVC as H.264 to devices that lack support.
How do you play and edit the MP4 on Android?
Open Chrome's menu, tap Downloads and tap the file; it also shows up in your Files app. Android has played HEVC out of the box since Android 5 Lollipop, released in November 2014.
To cut it, open the clip in Google Photos. Google's video editing help says to touch and hold, drag the trim handles, then tap Save to keep an edited copy.
Google also notes that some video tools need Android 6.0 or later and at least 1 GB of RAM, and that non-Pixel phones on Android 9 cannot edit video in Photos.
How do you play the MP4 on Windows?
Double-click it in your Downloads folder. The no-watermark MP4 opens in the built-in apps right away. An H.265 HD file may need Microsoft's HEVC Video Extension first.
“In many cases, you can add support by installing a codec extension from the Microsoft Store, such as the MPEG-2, HEVC, VP9, AV1, or Web Media video extensions.”
Some history: Wikipedia records that Windows 10 version 1709 (October 2017) removed built-in HEVC decoding and moved it to a separate Microsoft Store download. That is why HEVC files can fail on one PC and play on another.
How do you trim it on Windows?
Use Clipchamp, Microsoft's video editor. Its trim guide says to select the clip and drag the handles on either side inward to shorten it.
How do you play and trim the MP4 on a Mac?
Double-click the file and it opens in QuickTime Player. Macs on macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later handle both H.264 and H.265, per Apple.
To cut it, follow Apple's QuickTime trim guide: choose Edit > Trim, drag the yellow handles, then click Trim.
How do you turn an HEVC file into H.264 on a Mac?
Apple says to open the video in QuickTime Player, choose File > Export As, and switch from Smaller File Size (HEVC) to Greater Compatibility (H.264). This is a re-encode, so do it on a copy and only when an app refuses HEVC.

Which TikTok links work with the MP4 downloader?
Any link that opens a single public video post. App links, browser links and short links all resolve to the same post.
| Link you paste | Works? | Best page |
|---|---|---|
| tiktok.com/@user/video/… | Yes | This TikTok to MP4 page |
| vm.tiktok.com/… short link | Yes | This page |
| tiktok.com/@user/photo/… | Pictures, not video | Slideshow downloader |
| A 24-hour story | Yes, while public | Story saver |
| A profile (@user) only | No | Paste one post |
| Private or deleted post | No | Nothing to read |
A photo post has no video track to save, so an MP4 button would make no sense there. Use the TikTok slideshow downloader for those images.
Why does a TikTok sometimes refuse to download?
Usually because of a setting on the creator's side or the post's privacy. If TikTok does not serve the file to the public, no TikTok to MP4 tool can get it.
- The post is private, friends-only or deleted.
- The post is blocked in the region our server reads from.
- It is a draft that was never published.
- The link points to a profile or sound page, not a post.
TikTok's downloads help page says that private accounts and users under 16 have video downloads turned off by default and cannot turn it on. Treat that setting as the creator's wish.
Quick fixes to try
- Open the link in a private browser tab to check it is public.
- Copy the link again from the Share menu.
- Wait a minute and retry.
- If the HD button fails, use the no-watermark MP4.
Can you reuse a downloaded TikTok MP4?
Your own clips, yes, always. Other people's videos stay theirs: save them for personal viewing, and ask before you re-post or edit them into something public.
- Back up your own posts before deleting them.
- Credit the creator if they agree to a re-post; the watermark MP4 keeps the credit visible.
- Report misuse of your work through our DMCA page.
Is the TikTok to MP4 tool safe and private?
Yes. No account, no app, no extension. Download links expire after one hour and we store nothing; files come from TikTok's own servers.

Frequently asked questions
Is this TikTok to MP4 tool free?
Yes. It is free, with no account and no sign-up.
Does converting TikTok to MP4 lose quality?
No, because nothing is converted. You get the MP4 file TikTok already serves, bit for bit.
Which button gives the best quality?
Download HD MP4, when TikTok has an HD copy. It is often H.265, so on an older PC the no-watermark MP4 is the safer pick.
Why does my HD file show sound but a black picture?
Your player lacks an HEVC decoder. On Windows, install the HEVC extension from Microsoft Store, or use the no-watermark MP4 instead.
Can I get an MP4 from a photo slideshow?
Photo posts are images, not video. Use the slideshow downloader to save each picture and the sound.
Can I save just the sound?
Yes. Tap Download audio here, or use the TikTok to MP3 page.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes. Use Safari or any browser; the file goes to Files > Downloads, where you can play it right away.
Can I download a private TikTok as MP4?
No. Private, friends-only and deleted posts are not served to the public, so we cannot read them.
How long do the download links last?
One hour. After that, paste the TikTok link again for a fresh link.
Is Tiktokioo.com part of TikTok?
No. Tiktokioo.com is an independent tool and is not affiliated with tiktokio.com, TikTok or ByteDance.
